In 2008, ecoATM was founded by three wireless industry veterans, including Mark Bowles. They quickly gained attention, funding and accolades as winners of San Diego Venture Group’s 2009 PitchFest, best new concept in retail-based kiosks at Coinstar’s KioskCom Self-Service Expo in New York, Connect’s 2009 “Most Innovative Product” award in the cleantech category, “Best Content Pitch” in the TechCoast Angel’s QuickPitch competition and second place in Qualcomm’s Q-Prize competition. The company raised $31.4 million in VC financing, plus another $40 million in debt before being acquired by Outerwall (formerly Coinstar) for $350 million in July 2013.
