Surfing Legends and Cancer Researchers and Survivors Surf for a Cure

The Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational has raised more than $8 million since its inception 25 years ago. Proceeds from it fund research at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. The unique event brings together the community to support promising early-stage cancer research and celebrate major breakthroughs in the San Diego region. At this year’s event, Howard Birndorf and Ivor Royston, who started San Diego’s first biotech company, Hybritech, were given the Rell Sunn Award for their achievements in cancer research.

 

UC San Diego Receives a $12 Million NIH Grant to Expand Metabolomics Workbench

UC San Diego’s Metabolomics Workbench is a repository of data for metabolomics research, which aims to identify and understand the small molecules that are produced within living cells and biological systems as a byproduct of metabolism. The funding will be used to add clinical data to the Workbench as well as to do clinical research. The goal of the project is to enable the development of better diagnostic tools by identifying important blood-based metabolite biomarkers associated with diseases.

 

The San Diego Region Has Been Recognized as a Top City for Fast-Growth Companies

San Diego ranked fifth in a survey by Inc. magazine of cities that are hot spots for fast-growing companies. Inc. reports that “San Diego excels in biotech and smart city innovation.” In addition, they acknowledge UC San Diego as a local talent pipeline ranked among the country’s best public universities. (It was ranked second by Money magazine.)
