Timeline: 50 Years of UC San Diego’s School of Medicine

The San Diego Union-Tribune has created a timeline of the UC San Diego School of Medicine’s key moments. The accomplishments include developing a sickle cell anemia test and life-saving pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE), performing the region’s first kidney and heart transplants, testing AZT for HIV/AIDS, and discovering green fluorescent protein (GFP).

 

2018 Winners of the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair

On March 14, more than 600 students from San Diego and Imperial counties competed in the 64th Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. Notable life science projects that received awards include “a microbiome approach to treat Galactosemia, a life-threatening genetic disorder” and “Targeting eIF4A4 by RNA Interference: A New Strategy for Breast Cancer Therapy.”

 

Encinitas Biotech Raises $19 Million for Autoimmune Therapies

Escalier Biosciences, with offices in Encinitas and the Netherlands, raised $19 million in venture capital financing to develop both oral and topical RORγt drugs for psoriasis and other autoimmune disorders.

 

SF-Based Twist Biosciences Opens Carlsbad Office

Twist specializes in DNA synthesis. The Carlsbad space will support sales, marketing, and administration as well as sequencing facilities. Twist customers can design, validate, and order customized DNA online.
