Biotech Briefing: SDVG Names 33 Cool Companies in Biotech and Tech

SDVG Names 33 “Cool” Biotech and Tech Companies

From more than 250 applicants, San Diego Venture Group has named 33 finalists as this year’s “Cool Companies.” These companies will be featured at a public event on April 30th at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. The companies will also meet with more than 80 venture capital firms and local investors at a private event in May. The San Diego Business Journal has the full list of companies.

 

Xconomy San Diego Names Finalists in Inaugural Awards

Last week, Xconomy San Diego named 42 finalists across eight categories in their first-ever “Xconomy Awards San Diego.” From companies to mentors and pioneers to turnaround stories, the full list can be seen here.  The winners will be announced and celebrated at an awards gala on May 29.

 

Video: UCSD Health and Fate Therapeutics Treat First Patient with Natural Killer Cells

Natural killer (NK) cells are a type of immune cell that plays a major role in recognizing other cells that are foreign or harmful, such as virally-infected cells and tumor cells. Whereas T-cells (in CAR-T therapies) need to be primed as targeted assassins, NK cells are more like patrol agents that can be generally activated against cancer and other invaders. The issue has been that NK cells are not easy to proliferate in vitro to make a cell therapy. While a number of companies have found different solutions to this problem, Fate Therapeutics makes NK cells from stem cells. Now, working with UCSD Health, Fate has treated the first cancer patient in a clinical trial for their NK cell therapy.
