Coworking Spaces Hit Million-Square-Foot Milestone

The total square footage of 90 flexible coworking office and lab spaces exceeded the 1-million mark last year. This represents about 1.6 percent of total office space in San Diego dedicated to coworking. San Diego is home to both national and local brands of coworking space, which includes Regus, Hera Hub, WeWork, Spaces, BioLabs, and Barrister Executive Suites.  The top three markets are downtown, Carlsbad, and UTC, but nearly half of the square footage is located in 45 spaces considered “everywhere else.”

 

San Diego Public Companies Behind in Adhering to New Board of Directors Law

Under a new law for 2019, California public companies must have at least one woman on the board by the end of the year.  San Diego Business Journal reports that San Diego has the highest number of public companies with all-male boards; of 86 (public) companies last year, 44 percent had all-male boards. The pressure for public companies doesn’t stop after this year. By the end of 2021, The new law mandates a public company have at least two women on boards of five members, and a board with six or more directors must include at least three women.

 

Government Shutdown Affecting San Diego Life Sciences

The longest government shutdown in history is affecting one of San Diego’s leading industries. From postdoctoral scientists to biopharma, the impact is being felt all around. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that some postdocs are seeking personal loans because they are working without salary. The FDA can’t accept new applications, which can hold up approval of new drugs and initiation of new clinical trials.

 

UC San Diego Alums Donate $1 Million to New STEM Program

UC San Diego’s new STEM program called PATHS through Enhanced Access and Mentorship Program has received a generous $1 million gift from alum Kimberley Phillips Boehm and Marcus Boehm. PATHS is designed to provide mentorship and financial support for undergraduate UC San Diego STEM students from under-resourced communities.

San Diego Biotech and Investor Happy Hour will take place from 4pm to 7pm on Wednesday, January 30 at a venue in Balboa Park.  The discussion will focus on taking companies public.

February 2:

On Saturday, February 2, the 3rd Annual SABPA Frontiers in Therapeutics and Diagnostics will take place at the Hilton Del Mar.  This forum will cover gene and cell therapy, including CAR-T therapies, and artificial intelligence.
