Inside Brixton Capital’s Solana Beach Office

The company’s space is all about finding that work-life balance

When private real estate investment firm Brixton Capital went looking for a new office, they wanted something that would reflect its dynamic, the “hardworking, get-it-done East Coast/New York mentality combined with the laid-back vibe of San Diego,” says CEO Travis King.

The open, airy space where the 6-year-old company landed, directly across from Fletcher Cove, does just that. Ocean views and a one-stop surf shop showcase what San Diego is known for, while standing desks, a full-service gym, and a focus on radical transparency must be paying off, since to date the company has acquired north of $1 billion in commercial real estate. King says it’s “a place where we can be active, and where we can try to blend our personal lives and our work lives.”

Natural light from 18 skylights, exposed wood beams, teal accents, and windows that let in the sea breeze play up the casual, beachy vibe, but modern furnishings, contemporary art, and industrial-style framework are all business. King says a spirit of teamwork underpins everything Brixton’s employees do. “Everybody here is very committed to getting done whatever needs to get done.”

Stand and Deliver: Considering Brixton’s health focus, it’s no surprise its bullpen-style floor plan features sit-stand desks. The openness of the space helps staffers communicate and fosters teamwork. The few private offices have glass doors.
Work Hard, Train Hard: The 4,000-square-foot gym has three trainers on staff who also teach classes. The jiu-jitsu setup makes sense when you consider that Chairman Marc Brutten is an avid martial artist and was a 2012 World Masters gold medalist.
Smooth Move: The kitchen is the heart of the office. Some companies have moved to the vending machine model; Brixton is the antithesis of that. There’s always fresh fruit on hand, so employees can sip a smoothie while they enjoy the ocean view from the 16-foot communal table.
Surf’s Up: Brixton’s gym is stocked with wetsuits and about 15 surfboards in different sizes and shapes, and it has a place to shower and get ready afterward. It’s situated just steps from Fletcher Cove, so it’s not uncommon for employees to catch a wave on their lunch break. Even guests can join in.
The Multitaskers: Balance boards, exercise balls, and other fitness equipment peppered throughout the office make it easy for employees to squeeze a little extra physical activity in during the workday. King says Brixton just isn’t a sedentary place.
