Edico and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Set Guinness World Record

The team analyzed 1,000 genomes in two hours and 25 minutes, the fastest ever

A team made up of personnel from La Jolla-based Edico Genome and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia recently made headlines for setting a Guinness World Record for analyzing 1,000 pediatric genomes in just two hours and 25 minutes. They accomplished the daunting task during the American Society of Human Genetics 2017 Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

The de-identified samples analyzed were from the Center for Applied Genomics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Researchers hope the results can lead to identifying genetic links to common childhood diseases.

The team used Edico’s DRAGEN Genome Pipeline, which company officials say is the first bioinformatics processor designed to analyze next-generation sequencing data, on the Amazon Web Services cloud. Edico beta-tested DRAGEN at the Center for Applied Genomics.

“The speed of this technology in processing vast amounts of raw data in a matter of minutes will allow us to deliver actionable results in hours—an important capability as we go forward in realizing the benefits of precision medicine for children and families,” said Dr. Hakon Hakonarson, director of the Center for Applied Genomics.
